Dave,

You are absolutely right. Furthermore, driving an opto with an opto
is bad news. Optos have very poor rise and fall times. That is the
last thing you want in a noisy enviroment; any noise that
is "sitting" on top of a leisurely rise / fall time will probably
take that input thru its threshold multiple times. That is noise
generated extra step pulses. You have to have crisp edges, (very fast
rise and fall times) to be noise-free.
