tool changers

I ran a Campbell 86 router (Fanuc
control) that had a 12 tool covered rack
that lifted and swung into range on arms
with a regulated air cylinder on a yoke.
An air blast cleaned the taper before
pickup, and relative move subroutines
handled the toolchange positioning;
dwells must exceed the rack speed. The
rack had tapered fingers with a bit of
spring action, and the pneumatic spindle
clamp had a bottoming sensor for
interlock. It worked well- the only
crashes were when human error put an
extra tool holder in what should have
been the empty (current tool) position;
followed of course by a tedious
jog/recalibration of the 2 end positions
and mathematical interpolation of the 10
intermediate positions. Great for
complex multitool operations, if you can
automate the programming somewhat.

Anybody know what kind of router head a
shop-built machine could use with a tool
changer? Do the Perske heads have air or
solenoid chuck options? Could a
Porter-Cable 3.25 be modified? I
currently avoid toolchanges all
together- carving with a vee bit and
chasing the border on the bandsaw, then
a flushtrim bit.
