CNC driving of lathe leadscrew

Is it possible to drive a lathe leadscrew using CNC, rather than via
the change gears? I know that this would also require a way to get
the spindle RPMS. But it seems like this would give you far more
flexibility of standard/metric thread pitches, as well as simply finer
control of feed rates for general turning, than is possible with
change gears.
