All of us do it that way. Some folks use an encoder on spindle and control
the feeds from that, and some of us put steppers on the spindle and simply
make multi-axis moves out of it. I do the latter myself, it's simple and
direct. Most CNC can cut metric, inch and odd threads, inside or out,
tapered or straight, and even multi-lead. My setup like most also does it
multi-pass and calc's the depth of each individual pass as it goes.
