more software stuff

Since we seem to have migrated into the world of software, I've got a
Linux boot question. Currently, to get Linux to find my CD drive in a
reasonable amount of time, I've got to tell it the address on the boot
line. i.e. when I pick rtlinux or regular linux, as I've set up my
lilo.config, I've got to type " ... sbpcd=0x630,Lasermate" the location
and type of old CD drive I'm using. I've tried to edit the sbpcd file,
and it doesn't seem to work, so I figure I've got to recompile the
kernel to get it to accept the edited file.
Is this correct? What I'd rather do, is just have that address
entered by the lilo script that launches the kernel so that I don't have
to manually enter it. I've tried to enter it into the lilo.conf file in
various forms, like I modify the amount of memory I have, but it is
ignored every way I try. This causes the machine to search out the
address of the CD drive in a process that will find it correctly, but in
about 10 minutes! Entering the address on the boot line causes a more
reasonable 15 second or so search. How do I get this one line into the
boot automatically? Or how do I tell linux the CD drive parameters
without having it look; is a recompile of the kernel with an edited
sbpcd file the only way?
