This is the simplest way, but not absolutely necessary. There are kernel modules
that need to be installed, but these could be installed at boot time (I do this with
a network card that doesn't autoconfigure, it needs parameters added to the command
line). Then, there are several programs that access shared memory, and this
requires priveledge to create and map memory areas. These programs can be
installed with the necessary priveledges.

But, in general, most people just run it as root (like me).
