Taus,
Checking the L297 & L298 Data sheets, AWO disables and turns off the
L298 driver output transistors.
However, you still must observe the rules.
High speed diode protection and stay within the relevant specs.
Turning the motors manually will have the coils loaded by the diodes
when the conduction threshold is reached. Assuming all the diodes are
functioning correctly, all will be well.
Breaking the connections (with power applied),(AWO off) removes the coil
loads allowing sudden and almost unlimited high voltages to produce a
spark as the gap opens.
This can overcome the diodes speed and max rating. Do this enough times
and eventually the semiconductor punches thru to destruction.
With AWO on and no motor revs, it appears safe to "pull the plug".
