This indicates that only one channel (A or B) is working. It could easily come
back with a little cleaning, fix a broken wire, or whatever.

Since these are apparently inch scales, you may find it nearly impossible to
replace with any other scale (unless you can be satisfied with one axis in inches
and the other in mm!)
