Thanks for all of your replies.
As usual, work is interfering with my hobbies so the time issue is critical to me.
I intend to do a "as clean as possible" system setup and to keep out of trouble by using a dedicated PC with the "right"
hardware in it. I also intend to get familiar with Linux before installing EMC. A long, long time ago, I wrote software for a
microprocessor based Unix variant: OS-9 for those who remember, so learning Linux should not be too painful.
Most of my impressions about Linux/EMC comes from reading the trouble seen by people on the list. There seems to have been a
lot of driver related problems and display ones. "I can only use it in 640x480 mode" and similar comments. My assumption is
that a newer release would have more current drivers, be better integrated and therefore have fewer installation problems.
When all works, then EMC could be installed. I did not imply or mean that EMC should be a fancy commercial package, I am just
trying to simplify and separate the problem areas from each other.
I learned a long time ago: Keep it simple and take small steps at a time.
