I have not read all of the thread, but here's a few comments.
First of all, there's video cameras that'll output a second video singal
with depth. I saw one on a exhibition once (SIGGRAPH 1997) and I think it
was MIT that was exhibiting it.

You can reconstruct depth from stereo pairs automatically. That's two images
from sligthly different angles. This technology is used in some satelites
that circle the earth. Each circulation, the satelite takes a slightly
different path, and the resulting two images is used to reconstruct
depth/ground level. This is accurate down to 1cm. I don't know how many
circulations are used for that precision.

You get 3d scanners, From Minolta that takes a image, and outputs color and
depth. May be a laser scanner, but it only takes a few seconds to scan a
model, and the price for the machine is around $10K

onto the object.
