Hi Andrew,
I seem to remember there was a chap at the local university doing something
like this with even simpler equipment. From what I remember he shone a
normal desk lamp on the original 3d object and pointed a video camera at it
as well - at an angle to it. Then he waved a pencil between the lamp and the
object and somehow captured the video image on a computer in such a way that
it processed the image as the shadow of the pencil revealed the contour of
each part of the surface as it passed across it, and reassembed this into a
usable 3D drawing form.
