Hi, Jared:
I successfully ran a Sherline mill using a 486DX2-50. The controller is Dan
Mauch's 2 amp unit running as a half-step. I'm running around 4000
steps/second, and that speed is limited by the motor performance, not the
computer. I replaced the 486DX2-50 with a 166 mhz Pentium MMx based machine
which I purchsed used.
I've got no idea how well the Linux/EMC combination works, but I'm quite
happy with TurboCNC running under DOS. I suspect that, because DOS is so
small and doesn't really interfere with your program, that it't offer the
best performance. Be sure that you don't load EMM386.EXE or HIMEM.SYS when
you're running CNC. With a slower machine (like the 486), there's enough
overhead in the system that the time taken by these drivers interferes with
delivering a robust pulse train to the motor driver.

|Anyone using an older computer to drive their CNC? I am a newbie
|and really don't have a feel for how much an older pc could affect
|the maximum pulse rate and other performance issues of a stepper
|system. I was hoping to find an old surplus computer to run my
|system when I get it together, but I don't know what processor
|would be unacceptable. I have looked at some controller software
|and have been surprised to see minimum requirements over 400 Mhz.
|What operating system would allow me to get the most bang for my
|buck--dos or Linux (I'm sure its not Windows)?
