Thanks Tom, others,

You hit the nail on the head. Rotated the UCS (yeah I know what is
UCS) to reorientate the xy plane parallel to the lines, and where it
couldn't trim before, it could now (exactly the same lines, only UCS
different). Looks like Acad is still a 2.5D CAD? Does the other CAD
software have the same "quirk"?
