I've Routered / Machined prototype switchtags out of Stainless Sheet steel before we would commit to having a Die made. I have used this in most cases:
http://www.miteebite.com/products/mitee_grip_e.html

I typically would place my raw stock onto a piece of aluminum stock with this paper. It holds quite well IF you get the temperatures right. I started doing it in an electric frypan, but an oven is a
better option. For more security, I sometimes even used a bead of hot glue around the raw stock. (different glues react differently, but I found one that sticks pretty well for side loading, then
peels off of metal cleanly)

Because I did it on a Router, and to save the tooling, I would start out by running the code with a diamond drag bit in the holder. The diamond would mark exactly where I could expect a centerline
of the tooling and plunge locations. I would then pre-drill thru holes where my Code was going to try to plunge. It's a lot easier to side cut than plunge............. Using a Mist coolant also is a
must.

Checkout the Mitee-bite stuff though.... Its come in handy now and then !
