If you get much below .0001" steps you will run into problems with some of
the controller packages not being able to put out fast enough pulses to give
you the rapids the machine is capable of. Chances are the machine can not
move in increments that small anyway do to slip and stick. When I am buying
encoders to use with Gecko G320 drives that is pretty much what I aim for.
So on my Bridgeport it meant that I needed 250 line encoders (1000 count per
revolution) on the X & Y. I ended up using some 200 line encoders I had on
hand for the Z which did give me a smaller step increment as it is geared a
double the X & Y axis.
