Hi JJ,
my first XY 3 axis mill used unsupported 28" long x .750" round linear
shafting (Thomson) and it is not strong. The machine frame is .750" thick
mike plate aluminum. I use a Rockwell trim router for a spindle and it bobs
up and down when it is does a rapid traverse. You can easily deflect the
gantry or carriage more than a quarter inch when they are midspan on the
ways. I work around it by keeping my feedrate on the finish pass really low.
I'd wouldn't do an unsupported design again without first proving the
rigidity perfomance. The linear salesman suggested I go with profile ways
mounted to a frame but I was real green and based my design on an old PCB
router which used unsupported round linear shafting. I found out later the
hard way, that router exploits the unsupported shaft design probably because
it's feed rate and traverse speed is so low.
HTH
cheers,
Denis
