There is a mechanical dro readout on the cover of the belt housing of
the Z axis. It is a rectangular box that stickout out about where a
handle would be.

Yes the machine is stock with a ball screw on the Z. Reading the manual
that seems like it was the norm for the older NC Series II machines.
