It does make sense to try to reduce the cost of the parts we all use.

I'm making a breakout board. it will cost about $30.00 in parts,
including about $11.00 for relays and close to $13.00 just for the
removable terminal strips.

The board will be $21.00 each for the first 3 (ExpressPCB) then about
$5.00 a board.

So, for a SIMPLE project it is easy to hit $40.00 per board. Add
high quality components, assembley costs, troubleshooting and
shipping and $50.00 per board is pretty easy to hit.

For a kit that will have limitations in performance the 'kit' market
there, but I for one would still long for a 'real' driver.

Compare a Xylotex for around $40.00 per channel (including shipping
and connector) and you have a tough target to beat. once you start
getting into the high amp stuff, the $125.00 for a Gecko can be
beaten easily, but you would have a long way to go to make it cost
effective.

And you have a driver someone talked about last week that was in
between those prices, it seems the market is covered.

There already is a guy who posted a open source schematic on this
list some 6 months ago. Mostly for those in countries where the VAT
makes even a dollar cost more than a dollar. I have not heard one
person post that he installed and is running it though.

I would be very interested in looking at the project, but unless it
offered more performance or reduced price it would be a hard sell.

just my $0.02
