Monty,

I don't think you have posted any specs on the motors other than the
torque. What is the rated voltage and amperage? If the motors are high
inductance that will kill your speed. You also have not mentioned how
they are wired in the posts I have looked at. Are they 4, 6 or 8 wire
and how do you have them hooked up?

I also wonder about the gearing you are using. I have a buddy that has a
plasma cutter he made from a Torchmate kit that sounds about like yours.
It is set up with some 135 oz/in motors direct drive with the spur gears
on the motor shaft. It easily does a couple hundred inches per minute.
With the reduction you have the motors may be pushed up to an RPM range
where there is just not any torque left. My guess is that your step
increment is much smaller than any tolerance you will every be able to
hold with a plasma or flame cutter.
