Fred and list,
This has already been achieved with Dolphin.
Dolphins new Windows lathe package is a fully featured package with
more features than even Mastercam lathe at a quarter of the price.
Supports profiling, threading, grooving, part off and boring as
standard.
It takes the geometry of the tool tip fully into account when working
out the toolpath so it follows accuratly the profile of the work.

For simple lathe work it has a conversation mode where you can input
dimensions as opposed to working from a drawing.
For casting or forging work it's also able to specify an outer shape
to reduce air cutting.
Although offered at a list user price for hobby work this is actually
a full industrial package offered to and well received by industry as
opposed to a low end package offered to the hobby market.
