Ok optos are not good in a dirty environment for positional sensing, but
for limit switches... the slotted ones fail safe, i.e. if it gets crud in
it, it just looks like it has operated, giving you a nice indication that a
little maintenance with a cotton bud is required!

Thanks for the heads up about safety, I've been toying with a limit switch
(multipattern) idea for a while and
sounds like this is a good case for a "backup mechanical switch". It could
be arranged to activate
a few mil after the electronic switch.
