Sounds like Gettys dc servos with tacho feedback to the Gettys controller
with a motor mounted (possibly geared) resolver whose signal was fed to the
NC or CNC. This was a fairly standard setup and the Gettys controller
required between 5v and 10v (plus or minus with respect to ground) to give
motor top speed in either direction.
