I should have mentioned this earlier. Automation Direct in Atlanta sells
inverters and vector drives for a fraction of what I could find them
elsewhere. For example, a 5hp (3hp/1ph) inverter is under $400. The brand
is Hitachi. Haven't used the one we bought yet but it sure looks nice
collecting dust on the shelf.

These folks started as PLC Direct and later branched into other stuff. They
sell a 10-input 8-output PLC for $149. I've used three of them so far and
think they are great. Their PLC software is the best I've seen.

They also sell limit switches ($16), encoders ($90) and lots of other useful
things. Can't remember the URL and the catalog is at home, but you can find
them with a search. The best thing about Automation Direct is incredible
product support (for an electronics supplier).
