I apologize if this double posts, (XP's security "feature" of crash
and reboot every half hour got me again)

Have you looked at high wattage laser diodes? Like 4 watt (or less)
used for non-contact soldering?
Power and thus heat can be controlled by PWM effectively making it a
pulse laser.
