Your application seems similar to the foam cutting of wing cores done
by model airplane enthusiasts. They also have to control the heat in
a wire, while also moving four steppers...

If you search on foam wing cutting, you should turn up a French site
with good info, called cnc.net or some such. There is software,
wire "heat" control circui and board, machine axes, etc., there. A
German site/product called Step4 may have additional info and insight.
