Bill,

Remember that engine did not always mean what it mean to us today...

From Tony at Lathe.co.uk (possibly the worlds greatest catalog of
lathe stuff):

This would imply that the back gear and screw-cutting is what earns
the term "engine". This is in line with what I was taughtmany years
ago, by a very old lathe operator...

As others have said, this type oflathe was able to make "engine"
parts.

An engine lathe can be "bench" size or bigger...
