I have used Mcmaster carr ball screws for years on various machines. The
best I have seen was .002 axial and max was .010. Yes you can replace the
balls that come with the ballnut. The are usually .1246 and replace them
with .125 balls. That will generally reduce the backlash down to .002 or
less.
BTW the leadscrews I get from them are Thompson.
Depending on the size of the lathe I would use at least a 3/4" ballscrews or
one the same size as the acme leadscrew.
