Yup, that is basically how the first axis of the Excellon was made.
They glued a granite beam
about 3" x 8" directly on the table. Then, there was a 'spider' made of
aluminum, about
18" square, with a set of air bearing slider plates on the bottom, and
another set, at 90 degrees
(exactly, to about .1 arc second) on top. The second axis then rode on
the spider, and was slid
around by the first axis.
