One of the best sources for all types of port converters
is "B&B Electronics", you might find cheaper but you
you won't find better.
They have an outlet in Europe also.

www.bb-elec.com

I've used them for years.
Look up their model 485COSR converter. $59.95
Similar models available depending on the type of
connectors you want.
If you are electronically inclined, the PDF file listed
gives a schematic. (simple circuit)

In a electrically noisy environment, I highly
recommend the RS485 standard. It is far superior
over the RS232.
Transmit over thousands of feet using a balanced load.
This means it is much less prone to interference
that is commonly found around machinery.

The VFD... I was hot to purchase one until I discovered
it meant a substantial loss in torque at lower speeds
(or was that at higher speeds? can't remember)
