Bill,
use SBC as a physical interface. It is in turn connected to a "server" over
the network.
I/O card plugged into ISA bus of SBC can generate pulses for a drive.It also
can
generate analog signals for a servo, also whole bunch of other signals for
relays
and so forth.
Server in this case is a controller which does processing of G-codes.
