Re: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Print Servers and SBCs for CNC control

For what it may be worth, I have several new Single Board Computers
(SBC's),l complete with PC104 Interface. The boards have plenty of IO
including

3+ serial ports, 2+ parallel ports, onboard VGA and LCD panel support,
Floppy, IDE, and a Compact Flash Slot. I Also have new PC-104 Expansion
cards which add either 8 channels of relay control (using on-board relays)
as well as 48 bits of Digital I/O. (I say 3+ & 2+ because I think that
they may actually have 3 parallel ports and 3 RS-232 + one RS-422. I would
have to open a package and look at the docs to confirm this.)

With the compact flash slot, it would be possible to build a unit with no
moving parts. Oh, I forgot to mention, it also has a built-in 10-Base-T
Port.

From a hardware level, these are all you would need to have the
flexibility to do what you are describing. They make great controllers
for just about anything.

I purchased several of these for a networked robotics project. I only
need to keep two as my project has changed.

If anyone is interested, please feel free to contact me off list

You know, Bill, for me price point is of a great importance,
so the least expensive I found for $119, q-ty 1, made by www.abiatech.com.
Never tried it, though.
If you look at Circuit Cellar Mag, you'll find numerous companies making
SBCs,
there are getting more and more of them with every issue.
For interfacing I would recommend to read "Build your own universal
computer
interface" by B.Chubb.
