Re: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Open ended belt drive for cnc router?

I have just such a system. It is 6' X axis, 4' Y axis with a 12" Z (the Z is
not rack and pinion, but ballscrew) I used 80/20 rails with imbedded rack
and pinion drives (the rack is on the underside of the rail so it never gets
dirty). One 300 oz.in. stepper drives the X axis on one side which is
connected to the other side by a 4' rod with the same spur gear as on the
stepper side. All steppers are driven by Dan Mauch's older model stepper
driver which, once I sorted out the grounding/noise issues (with Tim's
generous help) has been flawless.

I am not sure about the accuracy of the unit. I think that the 80/20 plastic
slides create far too much friction in the system. I am looking to MiniTec
for the next unit (which will be much smaller) for the structure and has
bearing slides. It will be ballscrew for increased accuracy. For my
purposes, the rack and pinion worked well and was a heck of a lot cheaper
than any other system that I could find.
