Brian, I use VM4 with my BOSS 6 controller via HyperTerminal from a
win2000K box without any problems. I set HyperTerminal to software
handshake 8 data bits, no parity, and two stop bits. I only have
three wires (RX, TX, GND) in my cable and no null modem stuff.

I did have to make my own post as the one supplied with VM4 didn't
match the BOSS 6. There are newer posts availble on the Mecsost
website. I can send you my BOSS 6 post if you want. I'm not sure how
different the BOSS 8 is. Contact me offline pete @ vavaroutsos.com.
