A good text is:
Manufacturing Automation : Metal Cutting Mechanics, Machine Tool Vibrations, and CNC Design
by Yusuf Altintas (Author)
It is targeted at 3rd-4th year Mechanical Engineering Students and graduate students with a background in Vibrations, Controls and basic machine design. You should have a good understanding of Linear Algebra, Ordinary Differential Equations etc to make good use of this book. You can still get value out of the book with out these pre-requesites.
I went to UBC where Dr. Altintas teaches and used a draft of this book (before it was published) in one of his courses. It was the best course I took in my 5 years at UBC. (Class projects included measuring the dynamics of different axes on an old mill and designing multiple controllers to give the desired response. After designing the controllers, we coded various algorithms to perform linear, circular and splinar trajectories with appropriate speed ramping. Other topics included various theories on the physics of metal cutting which could be used in more advance adaptive controllers. Sensor Assisted Machining... Chatter theories (a type of non-linear/non-harmonic vibration)...)
I also like the following book on brushless PM motors:
Design of Brushless Permanent Magnet Motors by J. R. Hendershot Jr and TJE Miller. It is hard to find from most bookstores. The ISBN is 1-881855-03-01 Contact www.motorsoft.net The book has good elec and mechanical models of the brushless motor that you may find useful when specing the motors and the parameters in your controller. (Assumming you decide to use brushless motors.)
I am in process of put together my own CNC mill. (I plan to document the process carefully and publish the results if it is successful) Let me know if you come across books that you would recommend reading.

Subject: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Best CNC Textbooks
Hi,
I'm starting down the road of building a CNC set up. I'm following
the series in HSM.
What are some of the best texts on CNC ? - need info on both
programming and building a CNC system.
Thanks,
Joe
