Jon,
The point is that they don't have to be square. If all you do is read
several X coordinates at Y distances you will get the reqired reading
even if you use a 30-60-90 triangle. The bigest requirement is that
the surface is fairly smooth. It doesn't mater if it is concave,
convex or shaped like a lightning bolt.

Don't over complicate things.
