Framing squares do work. As long as you have something that is sort
of straight and close to 90 you are OK. Use an indicator to get a
(reasonably) straight edge parallel to the X axis. Put down your
square and take a couple of X readings at known Y valuses. Flip the
square and take readings again. If they are the same relative
magnitude but opposite of the original readings you are square.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt...
