Jerry,

Is this a typical South Bend lathe bed?

If so I can understand your reluctance to tackle
scraping the v-ways. Actually I should say hand grinding, as the ways are
hardened and cannot be
scraped conventionally.

Nevertheless I have seen many redone using prussian
blue, a pencil die grinder, straightedges, and a polymer casting replicated
from the ways used as
a guage. The casting is made from an unworn area
of the bed, typically from under the headstock or
near the tailstock.

I have also seen polymer materials used to build up
lathe ways.

As far as plasma spraying... well When ITW purchaced Miller Welding they had
a plasma spraying
business unit. I was sent up to check it out and write
some reports. Interesting process, but I don't think it
would be the best for building up worn machine bearing surfaces. It is hot,
nasty, creates porous
metal, and is typically non-ferrous. Someone might be
doing it but I have never seen it.

If you have been quoted $500 for regrinding the whole
bed I think that is a very good deal. There is other work to be done to the
carriage of course with shimming, scraping, and/or the application of
polymer
materials like Super Alloy, Moglice, or Turcite.

Also keep in mind that if tools are on the centerline,
even quite worn v-way beds can still give accurate
results when turning.
