Those switches should be called over-travel limits. They are to be a saftey
shut down if something has gone wrong to prevent damage to your machine.
They should work just like the e-stop. You should have only one home switch
per axis.

IMO, it makes no sense to put them anyplace except at the exteme
ends of travel. One of my commercial machines "homes" at the NE
corner, the other at the SW corner.

All the moves away from home on the NE machine are negative signed.
Just the opposite on the SW homed machine.
