Hi George,
I think you can go up to 400 ppr (most motors in half step mode).
But for microstepping you'll need more ppr, depending of microstepping
factor.
I can upload my project - how I made optical encoder system with about
600 ppr, with disc diameter of 50 mm. Increasing the diameter, you can
proportionally increase number of ppr.
This project is easy, with standard components. You only need to
purchase optical disk, (positive film).
