Dave: It's not a function of "average heating due to voltage drop" or
anything "practical" like that! If there is a significant intermittant/irregular
voltage-drop even ONLY when running at higher speed, etc., you can loose steps,
and NEVER "figure out" what the [deleted] is going on! Just USE the 16 ga.
wire, and have NO problems due to V. drop!
