Does RS refer to Radio Shack? If so, you could probably get better prices
throughAllied Electronics!, Or perhaps Newark, etc. Another source,
DIGI-KEY, I think, comes to mind. Then, there are lots of 'surplus houses'
that sell new, or practically-new parts at reduced prices. Some of these
vendors have minimum order quantities, but most have a pretty low limit
(usually about $25.00 US). (Which may be a small fortune to some folks).
VA is the abbreviation for Volt-Amps, literally, volts multiplied by amps,
and is a figure of merit for how much power the transformer will produce.
At a power-factor of unity, one VA is the same as one Watt. If you can
measure the open-circuit voltage of the 500 VA winding, and for a toriod,
safely assume about 95% regulation, you could calculate approximately how
much current the winding will deliver, i.e. 500 VA divided by 95% of the
measured Volts should yield approximate Amps available. I live in The U.S.
Which side of the big (or bigger) pond are you from?

with the power surrply which is I don't know what parts to bye i.e. caps
and rectifiers . the transformer I intend to bye is a toroidal type 1000va
11.25A 48V with the secondary winding at 500va . so my questions are what
does VA stand for, what sort of rectifiers do need and what size and sort
of capacitors do I need ,for any uk people out there I am hoping to bye
these from RS so if you know any stock numbers would be most appreciated
for all the boys in the USA , I don't mind byeing from there if you have
any ideas all your help will be vary helpful
