To refine the accuracy of home switches, you can qualify them with an
optical interrupter-type sensor (many can be salvaged from old floppy
drives) that detects a slot in a disc mounted to the leadscrew. This is
essentially the same as the index channel on a shaft encoder.

You might take a look at shop-vac hoses. Some of the cheaper ones
are very stretchable, which isn't so good for vacuums, but makes
a passable bellows. Goretite is REALLY expensive, like $200
for one 3' length!
