I'm not sure that there are a lot of electronics in this hobby. we
cut parts mostly. the electronics is only a barrier to an
operational machine.

google JONES on STEPPERs to get some ideas of stepper motors.

then search the links in the links section for more ideas.

for someone starting out, I would suggest getting something like a
Xylotex board to drive some steppers, and some old printers to obtain
cheap steppers. then just make them move. very simple and the tool
that becomes a hammer.

and like my mother used to say, if the only tool you have is a
hammer, everything looks like a nail !
