Another guy who has done a lot of work with unconventional parallel kinematics
is Till Franitza:

Till had one machine he called a "roto-hex" that didn't require any lead
screws or ways of any type! It consisted of six motors driving individual
single throw crankshafts. Each crank had a rod hooked to it via a ball joint.
The other end of each rod was hooked to the spindle carrying platform through
another ball joint. Till's desktop machines are all EMC controlled.

I sure wish I could find that picture of the roto-hex, it was the easiest
hexapod type machine to build I've ever seen & I'm sure we could get the
kinematics for it from Till...
