To add further to Matt's comments.. Another form of a parallel machine is the
SCARA arm http://www.intelligentactuator.com/products/scara/default.asp and
http://www.bridgeport.edu/~dtoundyk/Robotics/SCARACalc.html

Whilst generating tool paths for simple 2D and 3D shapes is easily
acomplished with a wide range of low cost CAD CAM packages, the task of
converting them to real world movements is far from trivial.
To the best of my knowledge, the only low cost (free) software that will
support parallel kinematics machines is EMC. Even then, some degree of
tweeking of the code may be required - Strut lengths are hard coded for the
most part.
