I've often wondered about something like an old gameboy as a DRO
display. Somewhere out on the web there is a page on hacking them -
they are basically a superset of the venerable Z80 instruction set.

The cost in time and money of hooking up a suitable display to a micro
and getting everything built and packaged is what makes using a
computer more attractive. But if an old consumer product with the
necessary hardware could be used as a starting point...
