Virtually ALL Linux distros will format the hard drive regardless of what has
been installed in the past - You don't need to (and at don't want to) do the
formatting under DOS/Windows.
Most distros can be used for EMC (keep clear of RH7.x though). Some require a
little more effort than others, but the BDI alleviates most of the headaches
of doing your own install from scratch.
If you want to try Linux and EMC without going through the trouble of doing
an install, download the BDI-Live ISO - At around 145Mb, you can fit it on a
mini CD and even test a computer before buying it.
Please remember, the Live CD is under heavy development so may not work on
some computers.
Download BDI-live_rc21 from http://emc.obstinate.org
