Dennis,
Lots of us use EMC for our machines, and most use the BDI for install. It's
not perfect, and has some problems, but there are some good guys working
them out. You don't need your own version of linux as RedHat 6.0 comes on
the BDI disk. If your computer will boot to the CD, simply stick the BDI
disk in and turn on the computer. Once it boots, just follow the menus and
it will install over any windows that you may have on there. If your
computer is an older one and won't boot to the CD (you need to go into the
computers setup to tell it what your first boot device is) you can boot the
EMC install from a floppy. There are directions on the BDI CD for doing
that. Not sure what the install size is, but you can probably get by with
less than a gig. Min computer for steppers is probably on the order of 200
Meg Pentium with 64 meg of ram. It will work on less, but probably not as
well as you would like. Faster is always better.
A better list for questions on EMC is the EMC Users list. Go here for info

sister site to the CCED group, as many of the same members are there, for OT
subjects, that are not allowed on the CCED list.
