I made a 297/298 retrofit on a project I built years earlier, and it worked
great, first time. (Actually, I didn't realize the software needed the 297,
and didn't have them when I tore into it, so I made a one-chip substitute.)

I was driving VERY small steppers, though, and didn't need great
performance.
