It cannot "lose steps". It is a servomechanism, and moves the motor until
the difference between commanded position and actual position is zero.

If the control loops are not properly tuned, it can develop oscillation that
build to an amplitude that exceeds the fault limit, and it will fault.

There are only two ways that the Gecko 320/340 will lose steps.

One is that the setup and hold times for the step pulse and the relationship
between step and direction signals is violated. The Gecko 340 (at least
at one time) had some unusual timing relationships, and some software
definitely violated it.

The second is that noise of some sort is interfering with either the
step/dir
signals form the computer or the encoder signals from the motor, and causing
false counts to be registered by the drive.

Both of these problems are fairly common, especially in systems built
by people who haven't done this sort of work before.
